Calepini

Calepini: what is that?

Calepini is a multilingual and multidimensional, interlinked and interactive dictionary.

Our mission is not only to break down language barriers, but also to reveal the beauty, complexity and diversity of human language.

Calepini: why this name?

Calepini is named after the Italian scholar and lexicographer Ambrogio Calepino, who created one of the most influential dictionaries of its era.

A genre-defining dictionary

Calepino's dictionary was revised and extended by himself and many others.

False friends and shifts in meaning

The name Calepino became a synonym for dictionary, but it did not stop there. In Italian, calepino refers to some outdated and voluminous scholarly work. In French, on the contrary, calepin now refers to a small notebook.

In the plural

Calepini is the plural form of Calepino. The plural stands for multilingualism and personalization.
